Introduction The Project The Artists The Labels

LIGHT
Elisabeth Hölzl

Filtered light is the main theme in Elisabeth Hölzl's photograph, which shows the passage of light through a perforated surface. As she describes it ‘transpiration, permeability, mutation, filtration, and sedimentation are the key processes in the tireless respiration of the world, fulfilled in the continuous exchange of water, oxygen and light with earth and sky’. Light is always present in viticulture: its presence marks the grape’s maturation process and its absence is vital in the cellars, barrels, and bottles. As Hölzl explains, ‘the label’s perforated surface references the transparency as well as the porosity of the soil and the leaf, a vehicle of permeability and transpiration, as light as the hand that supports but does not force the natural processes’.
