Wines are ambassadors of their places of origin. Though the area is limited and well-defined, the vineyards of Casòn Hirschprunn present a variety of growing conditions. As a whole they give expression to the particular character of the entire terroir, and are the source of its wine’s complexity.
Magrè is situated at the southern extreme of Alto Adige, open to the sun of the Adige Valley while enjoying the protection of a recess in the rocky slopes of the Favogna Mountain. At heights that range from two hundred and twenty to three hundred and fifty meters (seven hundred and fifteen to eleven hundred and fifty feet) above sea level, it is here that we find the vineyards of Casòn Hirschprunn, exposed to the south and southwest. The grapes grow primarily on the thin, sandy, gravelly and highly chalky soil of the Magrè moraine, which is loose in texture and therefore very well drained.
Other planting sites, at the edges of the tracts of scree, are marked by medium-weight and partly loamy soil. The Mediterranean but partly alpine microclimate offers an excellent balance of growing conditions. The significant difference between day- and night-time temperatures helps the grapes preserve the acidity that gives a wine both freshness and elegance. A strong southerly wind – the Ora – affords the vineyards healthy ventilation during the hours of the afternoon.
